Gender Equality & Trans Rights - Not Human Rights?

Updated: Jan 28, 2022

Yes, all of us have heard of these two topics; but have you ever wondered why they are discussed extensively all over the globe? Why are these topics the talk of the town nowadays? Today, I was assigned the task to attend MUN sessions of the CSW Committee, and I have penned down all of my observations in this article. Read on to know more!

Today’s sessions were definitely educational and knowledge-enhancing – and most of them revolved around discussing solutions to the issues being faced in areas regarding Trans rights and gender equality. All participants had equally innovative ideas to combat discrimination against these communities. Everyone emphasized on how our population needs to be educated on these topics – on how they should be inculcated in the curriculum that the education system has imbibed. Awareness is the key to evolving and opening up minds to ideas such as this one itself.

According to historians, in ancient times, these practices were considered a part of the ‘normal’, too; yet this liberal train of thought was disrupted thanks to colonialism and religion – as a few delegates would like to say. Delegates believe that blind faith in ideas such as that of religion is partially responsible for what renders people’s minds to be prejudiced. The delegate representing the UK says that the country has a major role to play in that.

Contradictory to the past, present-day humanity does not seem to be as unprejudiced; there is not one place free from discrimination - be it racial, sexual or religious. Parents these days are 'concerned' for their children and instead of assisting their young ones in their journey to being ‘woke’, they discourage them instead – planting negativity and restrictions in the children’s young and developing minds. It is said that this hate for such communities originates from the thought that they cannot ‘naturally procreate’; and it is ridiculous to see how suddenly people (including many politicians) suddenly want more ‘naturally procreated children’, especially when there are millions of homeless and unadopted ones dying each passing day.

With regards to this, I, as a journalist, had picked up the topic of the link between Human Rights and this, and the responses that I got were absolutely remarkable. I believe that the freedom to be able to choose our very own partners is a basic, and that it’s addition to the

Human Right’s list should be considered; and, I was profusely delighted to know that other delegates such as the ones from Russia, Northern Ireland, Brazil and Nigeria showed full support to me on this.

This conference was definitely one that has helped many broaden their horizons and think out of the box – broaden their sphere of thinking. The chairs were extremely sweet and performed their jobs very well; the session definitely sparked an interest to get to know further about these specific topics. It was a pleasure observing these sessions, I am looking forward to attending more in the future.
