How The Virus Impacted All Sections Of Society

Updated: Jan 28, 2022

India, a country that was on its way to becoming one of the fastest growing economies, has now taken an unfortunate turn, and Covid-19 has played an enormous role in the sudden change of events that the turn has caused.

It has been more than two years since the Corona Virus came into this world, yet its side effects are more noticeable than ever, till date. And, unsurprisingly, the most harsh adversities hit the endangered - the vulnerable.

The Covid crisis has made the poor poorer, and a certain institution in the United States Of America even indicated that the first wave of the virus might have doubled poverty present in India. Due to the imposition of a lockdown on the people on not one but many occasions throughout these two years, various people lost their jobs, migrant workers were forced to relocate due to uncertain circumstances, and the virus stunted any hope for growth or development for the unemployed. Even those who were employed either ended up losing their jobs or enduring a huge cut in their incomes, even if they managed to keep their jobs securely and worked hard. Hundreds of workers who had come away from their loved ones in order to find work in the city were required to go back to their home towns with rarely any resources. The circumstances forced them to go back home and start new lives, which was definitely the opposite of easy. This section of the society took the worst hit of the CoronaVirus, and there are various who still remain affected.

The middle-class section of our society suffered a lot, as well. Thousands of people were fired from their jobs without any prior warning given before, and all of a sudden, unemployed. In our country, there were barely any people who continued to live with financial security, since even those who did not get fired from their positions had to handle a great decline in their salaries. This extensive transition was rough on the working class, many of whom were forced to start over their lives in the middle of their lifetimes. For these people, the liabilities kept escalating, while the assets were diminishing.

Now, coming to the Upper Class - the Elite hardly faced any misfortune. Most of them probably had their investments and assets in place, which is why they remained in a financially secure state. However, due to the lockdown, many hotels, restaurants, shops, etcetera were stipulated to remain closed, which meant that they probably did not gain any funds during that time period. So, yes, many of the rich might have suffered from loss while this was going on, but most of them usually tend to remain indifferent throughout such trying times, since they all generally have their investments and assets in place - as mentioned earlier.

If we look at this whole time period and reflect upon it, we could conclude that the arrival of the virus adversely affected almost all sections of the society, in one way or the other. Yes, a few sections were more affected than the others, but all of them took a part of the hit. Honestly, if we look at it from this perspective, we could also say that we have been in this together.
